About BI Research Day 2024
We invite you to attend the 2024 BI Research Day on Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at NCRC.
Throughout the day, you will hear about the innovative and interdisciplinary research taking place at BI.
Prizes will be awarded to recognize the outstanding work of our research community.
Ways to Present
Nanotalk:
Eight researchers will be selected to present a talk on their research. The nanotalks will be evaluated based on presentation structure, content, and visual aids. The mean scores from all judges will determine the top three winners. Additionally, the most popular talks, as voted by the audience, will receive the Audience Choice Awards
Nanotalk Requirements:
- Presentations will be 10 minutes. (Six minutes for the talk and four minutes for questions)
- PowerPoint required.
- Abstract must be submitted by September 6, 2024 for approval
- PowerPoint must be submitted for approval by September 13, 2024 to biointerfaces@umich.edu.
- Nanotalks are reserved for postdoctoral fellows and graduate students only.
Prizes for Nanotalk:
- First Prize: $125 Gift Card
- Second Prize: $100 Gift Card
- Third Prize: $75 Gift Card
- Audience Choice: $75 Gift Card
Photo Competition:
Any photos related to BI or your research are welcome. Five Audience Choice Awards will be given based on votes from Research Day participants.
Photo Requirements:
- Submit photo(s) for a gallery of scientific artwork/visualization.
- Submit photo(s) in JPEG or PNG format.
- Photos must be submitted by September 13, 2024.
- You should color print the photo on an 8.5″ x 11″(US Letter) piece of paper, and bring it to the registration station on the day of the event.
- The photos will be physically displayed and the voting will take place online on the research day.
Prize for Photo Competition:
- $20 gift card (5 will be awarded)
Microposter:
The microposter is a short summary of your research (published or unpublished) on an 8.5″ x 11″ piece of paper. Microposters are visual abstracts meant to give the audience a snapshot of your research. You will be standing by your microposter to present it during the event. The exact presentation schedule will be posted in advance. On the day of the event, three judges will review the posters, evaluating their structure, content, visual appeal, and your oral explanation. You may only choose to either present a microposter or a full poster.
Microposter Requirements:
1. Figure title or research question (≤100 characters, size 24, bold)
2. Author names and simplified affiliation as necessary (size 16)
3. Descriptive figure/visual abstract
4. Background, goals, and figure description (size 12-14)
5. Main text may not exceed 200 words.
6. Font: Times New Roman
7. Page Setup: 8.5″ x 11″ with at least 0.5″ on all sides. Orientation may be portrait or landscape.
Prizes for Microposter:
- First Prize: $100 Gift Card
- Second Prize: $75 Gift Card
- Third Prize: $50 Gift Card
Full Poster:
The Poster is a short summary of your research (published or unpublished) on a 4 x 6 feet poster board. Posters should be no larger than 55 inches wide by 45 inches high. Posters are visual abstracts meant to give the audience a snapshot of your research. You will be standing by your poster to present it during the event. The exact presentation schedule will be posted in advance. On the day of the event, three judges will review the posters, evaluating their structure, content, visual appeal, and your oral explanation. You may only choose to either present a full poster or a microposter.
Full Poster Size Requirements:
1. Figure title or research question
2. Author names and simplified affiliation as necessary
3. Descriptive figure/visual abstract
4. Background, goals, and figure description
Prizes for Full Poster:
- First Prize: $125 Gift Card
- Second Prize: $100 Gift Card
- Third Prize: $75 Gift Card
The deadline for registration is Tuesday, September 13, 2024 at 5:00 pm EST
Bring the actual microposter or full poster between 8:00 – 8:30 am for set-up on September 24, 2024.
